Brandon, 15 years old, is ignored by girls, can’t rap, is picked on, and has busted sneakers. His friends Rico (a smoking, drinking, lady’s man) and Albert (a wannabe R&B singe) are always with Brandon. They do the same thing, all day, every day. After seeing a classmate with Black and Red Jordans, the first ones ever made, Brandon knows that having these shoes will change everything. He does all that he can to get the money … short of anything illegal … and finds guy selling the shoes out of his car. He gives the seller every penny he has; and then the coveted sneakers are his. Soon, Brandon has all the confidence in the world and it shoes. Girls pay attention to him, he is admired by his friends, and he can walk with his head held high. That is, until Flaco, the neighborhood gangster, steals Brandon’s shoes after jumping him. Brandon is determined to go to any lengths to get his shoes back. As Brandon, Rico, and Albert, go on path to find his shoes, while Brandon’s alter ego (an astronaut) goes along for the ride. But Brandon has no idea of the ripple effect he will have on everyone around him, just for a pair of Kicks.
A mix between Boyz in the Hood, Kids, and the Wizard of Oz, Kicks is as funny as it is sad (FTC Affiliate Disclaimer). The connection between friends while bragging and boasting about what they have done or will do is something we have witnessed. The sad part is when you see how the tapestry of violence is deeply woven and inherited from one generation to the next. You will find yourself begging for the characters to find another way. Finding a permanent solution to a temporary problem, is never the right answer. This movie can be a moving and beautiful learning tool for those willing to hear the message. Women maybe uncomfortable or sadden with the portrayal of females in the movie, but they are not the main focus of this film. This focus is on Brandon and his journey into perceived manhood. This is a great film at full price with the startling and poignant moments.
