When Cindy’s dad has a heart attack, she and Bob must find a babysitter for their 3 kids. When everyone they know is unavailable, Bob suggest is brother Buck. Cindy can’t stand Buck. He gambles, doesn’t work, and is irresponsible. But they have no other choice. So they call and Buck comes over immediately but to the wrong house. Soon they are together and Buck is in charge. The oldest Tia has a chip on her shoulder since her parents made them move for a better job opportunity. The middle child Miles has all the questions ready to go in rapid fire succession. The youngest Maizy is a sponge to the world around her, which often leaks at inappropriate times. While the youngest two fall in line with Buck’s weird ways, it’s Tia that’s his biggest headache. She constantly runs off to be with her boyfriend Bug and tries to challenge him every chance she gets. But as much as Buck is changing her life, these kids will have an effect on his.
This classic comedy was the inspiration for comedies like Mrs. Doubtfire, Big Momma’s House, and Bringing Down The House (FTC Affiliate Disclaimer). But what sets this movie apart is that it allows emotion to dictate the story, not words. When Cindy and Tia see each other, no words are needed, just a hug. They don’t go into a long soliloquy or monologue about what they have gone through or making things better. A hug is just enough. Also, Buck’s take on parenting, unlike is laundry skills, should be brought into the 21st century. Whether it’s a golf lesson, school pick up, or use of a drill, we should all be a bit like Buck. This is a great throwback movie for the family with teens. Little ones may be too young for some of the language and material. Be prepared to laugh out loud and quote great one-liners. No need to watch past the end credits.
